How this drying-time calculator works
The estimate follows the same logic an IICRC-certified technician uses on site, based on the IICRC S500 standard for professional water damage restoration. Three things drive the result:
- Drying time starts from the slowest-drying material you selected (hardwood and concrete hold moisture far longer than carpet or tile), then adjusts for saturation, water category, and the room's temperature and humidity.
- Dehumidifier capacity is sized from the room's air volume and its IICRC drying class, expressed in AHAM pints per day for a low-grain refrigerant (LGR) dehumidifier.
- Air movers are estimated at roughly one per 50-70 square feet of wet floor, plus extra units for wet wall length when drywall is affected.
Why DIY drying often misses hidden moisture
Box fans move air but do not pull moisture out of it, so water that evaporates from a carpet simply re-deposits into the drywall and subfloor. Without a dehumidifier removing that moisture - and a moisture meter to confirm materials have actually reached a dry standard - water hides in wall cavities and under flooring, where mold can begin growing within 24 to 48 hours.
