Fire & Smoke Answer

What should you do after a house fire?

Do not go back inside until the fire department confirms the structure is safe. Fires weaken floors, walls, and roofs, and hidden hot spots can reignite. Your local fire department and resources like Ready.gov can advise on when re-entry is safe.

Call your insurance company as soon as possible to open a claim and ask about coverage for temporary housing. Photograph and list damaged items before anything is moved or thrown away. Keep receipts for emergency expenses like lodging and clothing.

Heartland Flood, Mold and Restoration does not perform fire, smoke, or soot cleanup. Heartland can extract the water left by firefighting hoses and sprinklers, dry the structure, prevent mold from that water, board up openings, and haul away fire-damaged debris. For soot cleanup, deodorization, and fire repairs, work with a dedicated fire and smoke damage restoration specialist.
